            Aluminum Nitride

Aluminum nitride is a technical ceramic with interesting properties that finds extensive use within the electronics industry. The thermal conductivity of sintered aluminum nitride is usually in the order of 170-180 W/mK, which is significantly higher than many other technical ceramics. It is also a good electrical insulator and can be easily metallized if required. For this reason the material is often used as a heat sink or in other applications where it is desirable to remove heat quickly. Aluminum nitride can be formed into large shapes and is also readily available as a thin substrate.

Sintered aluminum nitride is not considered a machinable material, but aluminum nitride powder is also used in the production of Shapal™ Hi-M soft machinable ceramic, which is machinable with ordinary metalworking tools and also possesses a relatively high thermal conductivity.

            Characteristics of aluminum nitride include:

            • Very high thermal conductivity
            • Good electrical insulation
            • Corrosion resistant
            • Can be used to fabricate large shapes
