            Custom-made Ceramic
            and Glass Components

            Silicon Nitride

This is a hard material, having good resistance to wear and abrasion. It maintains strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. Applications for the powder include refractory insulation and aircraft brake pad filler. The technical ceramic form can be manufactured by methods such as hot pressing and sintering, similar to the methods used to manufacture silicon carbide.

The material has good thermal shock resistance and does not deteriorate at high temperature, which allows it to be used successfully in molten metal applications and other severe conditions. Silicon nitride is also a good electrical insulator. Other typical applications are as engine wear parts, machine tools, bearings and rotors.

Silicon nitride can also be alloyed to form Sialon-type materials, which are combinations of silicon, aluminum, oxygen and nitrogen. The Sialon materials are easier to fabricate than silicon nitride and can be used to form more complex components while retaining many of the properties of silicon nitride material.

            Characteristics of silicon nitride

            • Maintains good strength at elevated temperatures
            • Good thermal shock resistance
            • Good electrical insulator
