            UV-Transmitting Glass

Transmission of ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths is an important property for applications such as germicidal irradiation, where microorganisms are killed by exposure to specific wavelengths. At a wavelength of 254nm, UV light breaks microorganisms down, making them harmless. By carefully using this wavelength, which is emitted by mercury lamps, water and air can be sterilized.

Synthetic fused silica provides good transmission from the deep UV wavelength of 180nm upwards and can be readily supplied in a number of forms. This material also has low fluorescence, which is an important and useful property.

Other optical glasses can also be supplied with varying UV transmission characteristics depending on application requirements. Zinc selenide (ZnSe), calcium fluoride (CaF2), lithium fluoride (LiF) and magnesium fluoride (MgF2) are examples of further useful UV transmitting materials.

            Characteristics of UV-transmitting glass include:

            • Excellent transmission of ultraviolet wavelengths
            • Performance will not degrade with exposure to UV light
            • Good chemical resistance
            • Good physical properties

Goodfellow Ceramic and Glass Division is able to supply a wide range of ceramic and glass materials as finished components. Our capabilities range from custom-made precision microcomponents with very high tolerance features to large heavy-duty components used in industrial applications. Additionally, standard semi-finished forms such as tubes, rods, bars, plates, crucibles and spheres are often available from our wide inventory. Please contact us with full details of your requirements, including drawings where available, and we will review and respond with a quotation as soon as possible.
